Building a life in the UK

Anna joined the Restart Scheme in July 2024 having relocated to the UK under the Ukrainian Refugee Settlement Scheme. The scheme was designed to allow Ukrainian nationals and their immediate family members to come to the UK and stay with a sponsor, offering temporary protection and access to benefits, work, and study.

“Anna was highly qualified in finance and marketing and was determined to use her skills and experience to build a better life for herself and her child in the UK,” said Callum Orlopp, Anna’s employment adviser. “Despite her qualifications, Anna struggled with the language barrier, and this was making it difficult for her to find work.”

Although qualified for many roles, Anna refrained from applying as she felt the language barrier would be an issue. “I was impressed by Anna’s ability to pick up English so quickly, and every time we met, she was improving, but she felt she wasn’t progressing fast enough,” said Callum.

Anna joined a few training sessions and her confidence began to soar. After a few disappointing interviews, Anna’s luck was in, and she secured a Marketing Apprentice role. “I was delighted for Anna; she has been in her role now for a few months and continues to share updates with me. Seeing her excel in this role and hearing how hopeful she is for the future brings a smile to my face,” concluded Callum.

“Anna told me that she was very grateful for Restart and the support we gave her. It really helped her put things into perspective and allowed her to flourish,” said Callum.
