“My goal is to move into paid employment, become even more confident, and maybe even open a café one day,” says David Taylor.
His confidence has been given a much-needed boost since joining the Restart Scheme delivered by Triage in North East England.
Before joining Restart, which provides tailored support to unemployed people, David was volunteering in a charity shop while he searched for a job. He was lacking in self-belief and feared he was not suitable for paid work. After receiving help and support from Triage adviser Fiona, David now has a much more positive outlook.
“I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect, but Fiona made me feel at ease,” says David. “I think it is going well and I feel more confident. Before, I felt that I was only good for volunteering. After coming to Triage I feel better because of the support and guidance I have received.”
Triage delivers the Department for Work and Pensions' Restart scheme across Middlesbrough, Redcar, Cleveland, and Hartlepool. People who sign up to the scheme are given personalised, flexible support to help them improve their skills and find a job.
Fiona arranged for David to attend a mindset and work skills course to help him improve his interview skills and confidence. He also secured a work trial and is now feeling much more hopeful about moving into paid employment.
“I want to get more money so I can get a place of my own and feel good about myself,” says David, who is continuing to do voluntary work while he searches for a job.
“My experience with Triage was excellent – top notch,” he adds. “I feel there is more support with Triage. More time is spent with me individually, I feel valued and my personal qualities are recognised.”
