Saddling up for a galloping success!

With a passion for all things equestrian, Keira Gallagher was champing at the bit to become a horse-riding instructor. The 20-year-old had the qualifications and experience to succeed, but the idea of setting up her own business was daunting. Keira joined the Restart Scheme, delivered by Triage in Middlesbrough, for tailored help and support.

The Restart Scheme is commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions to help unemployed people find a job that suits their needs. Triage delivers the scheme in the North East on behalf of Reed in Partnership, offering one-to-one advice and guidance.

Keira, 20, was referred to self-employment adviser Steph Campbell for help to turn her business dream into a reality. They discussed the legal requirements for the proposed business, KG Equine Services, and Steph was able to simplify the process so that it seemed less overwhelming.

Steph advised Keira on how to price her services to ensure they were profitable. She also gave Keira a head-start with accounting by offering some bookkeeping training.

After this first appointment, there was no chance of reining Keira in – she was unstoppable! She contacted two riding schools in the region who booked her services after she’d arranged the relevant insurances.

Still in its early days, the business is already galloping ahead. Keira’s diary is so packed that she’d be working round the clock if she didn’t book herself a day off! It’s been a runaway success, after seeming like an impossible dream at the start. A delighted Keira told Steph:

“I’d just like to say how easy setting up a business has been since being in contact with yourself and everyone else at Triage!”

The support from Triage does not end once a business is up and running, however we recognise that the first six months can be a challenging time for a new enterprise. That’s why we’ll continue to assist Keira to support her business growth plans, offering help with anything from bookkeeping and marketing to policies and procedures.

It’s great to see Keira taking the reins of her own future and we’re thrilled to see her determination and hard work paying off. We wish her all the best!
